In the aftermath of Barcelona’s dramatic 4-3 extra-time defeat to Inter Milan in the Champions League semi-final, head coach Hansi Flick has voiced his frustration over controversial refereeing decisions that he believes significantly impacted the outcome. The match, played at San Siro, saw Barcelona mount a spirited comeback only to be undone by late goals and contentious officiating.

“Since the time of Xavi, we have been the most hated team by the League Officials,” Flick stated, expressing his discontent. “They never want to see us win at all. We dominated the game against Inter and could have won easily if not for the wrong decisions made.”

The match was marred by several controversial decisions from referee Szymon Marciniak. Notably, Inter was awarded a penalty via VAR for a challenge initially overlooked, and a Barcelona penalty decision was reversed upon review. Additionally, Barcelona protested a potential handball and a foul in the build-up to Inter’s equalizer.

Despite these setbacks, Flick praised his team’s resilience and performance. “I’m disappointed, but not with my players,” he remarked. “They showed great character and commitment throughout the match.”

Barcelona’s elimination marks the end of their Champions League campaign, but they remain focused on domestic success. Currently leading La Liga with a four-point advantage, they are set to face Real Madrid in a crucial upcoming match. A victory would bring them closer to securing the league title, offering a silver lining to their European disappointment.

Flick’s tenure at Barcelona has been characterized by a commitment to an aggressive, high-risk style of play, restoring intensity to the team’s tactical approach. Under his leadership, players like Raphinha have experienced career-best form, contributing significantly to the team’s success this season.

As Barcelona turns their attention back to domestic competitions, Flick’s message is clear: the team will continue to fight with determination and integrity, striving for success despite the challenges faced on the European stage.
