Real Madrid is actively seeking a replacement for right-back Dani Carvajal in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad. Carvajal, who has been a dedicated player for Madrid with 389 appearances and numerous trophies, is entering the later stages of his career at 31 years old.

In an exclusive report on November 2, TEAMtalk revealed Madrid’s interest in Reece James, aiming for a significant bid next summer, envisioning him as the next impactful addition following Jude Bellingham’s successful integration. Manchester City has also entered the race for James, targeting him as a long-term successor to Kyle Walker.

However, recent reports from 90Min indicated that James, now the captain at Chelsea, has decisively ruled out leaving Stamford Bridge. He is committed to staying with the Blues and contributing to their resurgence in English football.

This decision has prompted Madrid to explore alternative right-back options, with the Liverpool Echo’s live transfer blog (13/11, at 14:53) citing claims from Spain that Madrid has turned their attention to Trent Alexander-Arnold. The proposed starting bid is €80 million (£70 million), but given Alexander-Arnold’s significance to Jurgen Klopp’s plans, a substantially higher offer, potentially exceeding £100 million or close to £150 million, may be necessary to initiate serious consideration from Liverpool.

The rumored interest from Real Madrid could also influence Liverpool to expedite contract negotiations with Alexander-Arnold, whose current deal expires in June 2025. Securing a longer-term contract with an accompanying salary increase is imperative for Liverpool to fend off potential suitors.

While Madrid can offer regular silverware contention, Liverpool’s history of success and Alexander-Arnold’s achievements at Anfield may prove compelling. However, if the pursuit of Alexander-Arnold falls through, Real Madrid might consider alternative plans, including the potential acquisition of Spanish rising star Ivan Fresneda, who was previously linked with both Madrid and Arsenal before his move to Sporting in the summer.

Despite the move to Portugal being seen as a stepping stone, Madrid could target Fresneda in 2024 as a solution to their right-back needs. Meanwhile, reports suggest that Liverpool, along with Arsenal, has joined Manchester United in pursuing a Benfica star.
