Three Spanish clubs are vying for the opportunity to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United, initiating what’s described as an intense summer pursuit for the forward.
In January 2022, the 21-year-old faced serious allegations leading Manchester United’s hierarchy to devalue him as an asset. Despite charges being dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service following a key witness withdrawal in February 2023, Greenwood was deemed unfit to continue at Old Trafford, prompting several clubs to seek his signature.
Eventually, Greenwood made a move to Getafe, offering him a chance to revive his career and reputation in Madrid. His stint in Spain has been notably positive, with the England forward tallying four goals in 11 starts for the LaLiga side, significantly enhancing his status and attracting interest from multiple clubs.
While there’s speculation about a potential return to Manchester United at the loan’s end, reports now suggest Greenwood has already made a decision to permanently leave the club, finding contentment in Spain alongside his partner, Harriet Robson.
Despite acknowledging his commendable performance in Spain, United views Greenwood’s return as contentious, leading them to consider selling him, especially with his contract expiring in summer 2025. Real Sociedad, Valencia, and Greenwood’s current team, Getafe, are reportedly in contention for his permanent transfer.
A source indicated strong interest from Spanish clubs, particularly Valencia and Sociedad, with scouts closely monitoring Greenwood’s impressive run at Getafe. Moreover, all parties seemingly accept that Greenwood’s future lies away from Manchester United, marking the closure of his chapter at the club.
United is eyeing potential replacements, with Timo Werner’s deal reportedly in discussion. The club seems poised to seek a fee between €20m – €25m (£17.3m – £21.7m) for Greenwood’s sale, hoping the competition among interested parties will drive the price towards the upper end of the mentioned bracket.
Greenwood’s journey began at United as a schoolboy, climbing through the ranks and making his debut at 17 in a Champions League match against PSG in March 2019.
