Mason Greenwood seems set to dismiss the idea of returning to Manchester United once his loan spell with Getafe ends. Instead, a potential move to Real Sociedad appears to be gaining traction as a favorite in securing the 22-year-old on a permanent contract.
Following his loan to Getafe for the 2023/24 season due to the decision that continuing at Old Trafford wasn’t viable, Greenwood has settled in quickly at his new club, with United contributing to part of his wages, rental, and translator fees.
His performance at Getafe, marked by two goals and three assists in 11 LaLiga matches, has earned praise, even sparking suggestions that he might be considered a star at the club. Despite earlier reports of potential discussions regarding his return to United led by new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe, it seems Greenwood has already made his intentions clear.
Fabrizio Romano outlined that Ratcliffe’s team is deliberating Greenwood’s situation but stressed that no decision is imminent, slated for discussion in the months ahead based on his performance. Nevertheless, reports suggest Greenwood has already decided against a return to United or any Premier League club, preferring to make Spain his permanent home.
While Getafe might struggle to meet the likely €25m – €30m fee United would demand, other LaLiga sides, particularly Real Sociedad, are reportedly eyeing a permanent deal for Greenwood. The Basque team, currently sitting sixth in LaLiga and in the Champions League knockout stages, is deemed financially capable and interested in securing him, especially as he approaches the final year of his United contract by summer.
This potential sale, albeit possibly reluctantly accepted by United, contrasts with the prior situation following Greenwood’s arrest and trial commitment in January 2022, where United had to consider writing him off as an asset. Thus, a potential transfer now, considering Greenwood’s long association with United since the age of six, might be seen as an unexpected financial boost for the club.
