Chelsea’s ongoing struggle to extract consistent performances from Mykhailo Mudryk has sparked renewed debate about his future at the club. Jason Cundy, a presenter for Chelsea TV, has been vocal in his criticism, suggesting that the club might be better off loaning out the Ukrainian winger. Cundy’s assessment of Mudryk’s displays thus far has been less than flattering, with the former defender expressing deep doubts over whether the player will ever fulfill his potential at Stamford Bridge.

Mudryk’s journey with Chelsea has been marked by a series of underwhelming performances since his high-profile transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk. The club had invested heavily in him, with the initial £62 million deal potentially rising to £89 million based on performance-related add-ons. However, judging by his form, it’s becoming increasingly unlikely that Chelsea will ever have to pay that full sum. Last season, Mudryk managed to score just seven goals in 41 appearances, a return far below expectations for a player of his price tag and reputation. Unfortunately, this season hasn’t started any better, as the winger has yet to find the back of the net in his eight appearances across all competitions.

Chelsea’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, who took charge in July, has openly acknowledged Mudryk’s ongoing struggles. The winger has been given only one start in the Premier League this season, highlighting the fact that he remains far from the first-choice lineup. It’s a startling situation considering that Chelsea had fought off competition from Arsenal to secure his signature. Many now question whether the West London club might regret not allowing Mudryk to head to North London instead.

Despite his struggles, there remains a glimmer of hope among Chelsea fans and pundits alike that Mudryk can eventually turn things around. The winger’s raw pace and athleticism are still undeniable, and there are those who believe that, with the right guidance and improvement in his decision-making, he could yet justify the hefty fee Chelsea paid for him. Cundy, however, remains unconvinced. Speaking on Chelsea TV, he stated, “He’s far down the pecking order for me. I just don’t see much in him as a player. He has football intelligence, but although he’s incredibly fast, it often seems like his feet are quicker than his brain—he struggles to adjust. He has so much potential, but he’s been really disappointing.”

Maresca, for his part, has been patient with the player but has not shied away from discussing the need for improvement. Earlier in the season, the manager touched on Mudryk’s challenges, particularly his inconsistency in making the right decisions during key moments of the game. When asked whether consistency was the key to unlocking Mudryk’s potential, Maresca responded, “This is who Misha is, this is Mudryk since he joined the club. He’s had good moments, but other times it’s like flipping a coin—you don’t know what you’re going to get.” He continued, “If he can become more consistent, he can take a step forward, and we’ll work to help him improve.”

Maresca’s assessment underlines the frustration many feel regarding Mudryk. He pointed out that many of the winger’s mistakes aren’t necessarily due to a lack of skill or technical ability but rather poor decision-making. “For me, most of Misha’s mistakes are not due to lack of quality or technical errors, but poor choices. Sometimes he should pass but tries something else, and we lose possession. Other times he should take on a defender one-on-one. It’s all about decision-making, and hopefully we can help him improve that.”

Should Chelsea decide to send Mudryk out on loan or even sell him, it’s likely that they will incur a significant financial loss. Glen Johnson, another former Chelsea player, weighed in on the situation and seemed to agree that moving the Ukrainian on might be the best solution. When asked whether Mudryk could succeed at Stamford Bridge, Johnson remarked, “We haven’t seen it yet. There have been glimpses of his talent, and at times he has looked unstoppable, but those moments have been infrequent. Right now, it seems he may not be suited for the Premier League, as we would have noticed it by now if he were. Perhaps his time at Chelsea is coming to an end.”

Johnson’s comments highlight a broader concern about whether Mudryk, despite his obvious physical gifts, truly fits within the demanding and fast-paced nature of the Premier League. While there’s always the chance that a loan move could provide him with the opportunity to develop and gain confidence, there’s also the possibility that his time at Chelsea could already be on the verge of a premature conclusion. In any case, Chelsea will need to carefully weigh their options as they look to recoup some of their investment or figure out how best to rehabilitate their str

uggling star.
