Liverpool supporters are absolutely livid, feeling hard done by due to what they argue are two entirely valid goals being unjustly nullified in their match against Burnley.
The sequence of events began with a contentious decision immediately following Nunez’s goal in the first half. Gakpo found the back of the net, only for referee Paul Tierney to halt play, citing a supposed foul by Nunez within the box. Despite VAR examining the incident and revealing no contact from Nunez, the decision stood, leaving Liverpool without the goal they believed they rightfully earned.
The frustration compounded further as the match progressed. Ten minutes into the second half, Harvey Elliott scored a goal directly from a Ryan Gravenberch pass from the right flank. However, VAR referee Simon Hooper prompted Tierney to review Salah’s offside position using the pitch-side monitor. While the replay demonstrated Salah’s offside, what wasn’t shown was the fact that a Burnley player had pushed Salah into that offside position. Consequently, the goal was disallowed, intensifying the fans’ sense of injustice.
The Liverpool faithful were left seething, attributing these decisions to what they perceive as blatant corruption within the PGMOL. This frustration isn’t isolated; Liverpool has already suffered a loss of nine points this season due to questionable officiating. Notable instances include the controversial disallowed Luis Diaz goal against Spurs and unacknowledged handballs in matches against Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal.
Expressing the widespread sentiment, one Liverpool fan emphatically stated: “It’s become Liverpool against PGMOL this season—a corrupt organization within what many consider the most corrupt league in the world.”
