Mikel Arteta expressed frustration with VAR once more after Arsenal’s surprising loss to West Ham at home, missing an opportunity to reclaim the top spot. This match marked David Moyes’s inaugural away league triumph against the traditional ‘big four’—Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United—after 73 attempts.

The controversy arose when Tomas Soucek scored amid uncertainty over whether the ball had exited play before Jarrod Bowen’s cross. Despite VAR’s involvement, the decision remained unclear. Former Gunner Konstantinos Mavropanos later doubled West Ham’s lead in the second half, securing their victory.

Arteta lamented, stating that if the current technology couldn’t definitively resolve such pivotal moments, the team’s focus should shift to winning games despite these setbacks. He acknowledged the moment had passed, with nothing further that could be done.

Despite Arsenal’s 30 shots to West Ham’s six, their recent league form has only yielded four points in the last four matches.

Moyes praised his team’s defensive prowess, emphasizing their brilliant structure, organization, and discipline. He acknowledged Arsenal’s relentless pressure but highlighted the significance of defensive strength in football, drawing a parallel to Arsenal’s historical proficiency in this aspect.

Regarding the contentious VAR incident, Moyes noted the lack of concern among the players, indicating the absence of doubt regarding Soucek’s goal. He attributed the delay in decision-making to the closeness of the call.

Looking ahead, Moyes mentioned the impending contract discussions, suggesting a patient approach without rushing the process. He expressed confidence in reaching an agreement without foreseeing any issues.
