Mauricio Pochettino, frustrated Chelsea manager, is urging owner Todd Boehly to provide more financial support ahead of the January transfer window. Reports suggest he aims to bolster the club’s finances by offloading four unwanted players, potentially raising an additional £150 million.
Under Boehly’s American co-ownership, Chelsea has surpassed the £1 billion mark in transfer spending across three windows. Despite this substantial investment, the team’s performance at Stamford Bridge has not seen significant improvement, evident in their mediocre ongoing campaign.
The recent 2-0 loss to Everton marked Chelsea’s seventh defeat in 16 Premier League matches, raising the pressure on Pochettino. The Argentine coach is feeling the heat due to his inability to address the team’s issues, reminiscent of his predecessor Graham Potter’s struggles.
In a bid to revamp the squad, Pochettino is pressing Boehly for more financial backing and hopes to secure new signings during the upcoming transfer window. Chelsea has been linked with strikers like Victor Osimhen (£120 million) and Ivan Toney (£80 million) to address their goal-scoring inefficiencies.
After the defeat at Goodison Park, Pochettino emphasized the team’s lack of clinical finishing and expressed disappointment over not securing the deserved points. He acknowledged the pressing need to strengthen the squad in the next transfer market.
To potentially reinvigorate the team, Pochettino made four changes during the Everton match, yet the issue persists with players not capitalizing on their chances. Armando Broja’s struggles in front of goal have convinced Pochettino of the need for a new No. 9 to convert the team’s numerous opportunities.
Broja is speculated to be among the four players set for departure from Chelsea in January, aiming to generate transfer funds. Other names in the rumored clearout include Ian Maatsen, Noni Madueka, and Deivid Washington. Broja’s underwhelming goal-scoring record at Chelsea, with only two goals in 28 appearances, has led to interest from Fulham, valued at £40 million.
Maatsen, despite limited opportunities, and Washington, who has scarcely featured since joining from Santos, are also poised to depart. Chelsea might consider loaning or selling Washington to maximize squad opportunities for the second half of the season.
