Brighton & Hove Albion suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Manchester United on Saturday, as Diogo Dalot’s late goal gave the Red Devils a 1-0 victory at the Amex Stadium.
The home side had looked on course for a hard-earned point, having defended resolutely for much of the match. But with just minutes remaining, Dalot popped up to convert a cross from the right and secure all three points for United.
It was a cruel blow for Brighton, who had matched their opponents for long periods of the game. The Seagulls had the better of the early exchanges, with Leandro Trossard and Solly March both going close to opening the scoring.
But United grew into the game as the first half wore on, and created several chances of their own. Marcus Rashford was a constant threat down the left flank, while Anthony Martial and Bruno Fernandes both had efforts saved by Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with both sides creating opportunities to break the deadlock. Brighton’s Adam Lallana had a goal ruled out for offside, while United’s Jadon Sancho was denied by a fine save from Steele.
But just as it looked like the match would end in a stalemate, Dalot struck to send the United fans into raptures. It was a bitter pill to swallow for Brighton, who will feel they deserved at least a point from the game.
The result sees United move up to fifth in the Premier League table, while Brighton remain in ninth.
